A very cool processing exhibition!

Very cool shapes made, based on dresses. I am contemplating making some 3d forms based on human shape…

A handy Processing Tutorial

http://blog.blprnt.com/blog/blprnt/your-random-numbers-getting-started-with-processing-and-data-visualization

Found a useful tutorial outlining a way to use processing to acess and visualise data. Looks neat! Will hopefully give it a go at some point

http://www.stats.com/ is a sweet stats website for sports stats.

I figure if I can find some starting point that interests me, then I can springboard into action with something I enjoy?

Inspirations

The following posts are links and Images of nice looking things I have found that can give me some inspirations, mostly looking at colours and shape.

3D Planet Generator

So final generator, heres a look at a range of different “planets” that have been generated from it.

Overall I am quite happy with how it has turned out.

The main concept behind this design is the idea of planets where industrialization and society have over taken all the life of the planet, and replaced it with buildings and structures. These planets have lost that life and therefore are symbolised by these grey opaque tones rather than vibrant bright colours.

The idea of creating random planets on demand gives us a unique experience where we can choose randomly sculpted cityscape planets and investigate their intricacy and detail

Why?

Why no vibrant colours?

The lack of colour is a direct symbol for the lack of life in these planets, now they are taken over by buildings and skyscrapers. Colour represents life, and the fact that these planets are no longer full of life means they are now shades of grey.

Why Does it Constantly Change Planet?

The planets are constantly changing and spinning if there are no inputs. This is because it emphasizes the idea that this program will create random planets. I played round with reducing the amount of times it flicked to a new planet, but decided this fast paced cycling made it very obvious to the viewer about what the program is doing, while also creating quite a nice motion in itself, of it spinning slowing and cycling through many different planets and designs.

Inspirations and Concepts

i have a concept!!! Finally!

I’m going to go back into using the spherical design I made to create these extruded boxes that create almost planet like structures. Looking back at my initial shapes, they looked quite architectural and also a little bit like tall skyscrapers and cityscapes.

So to build off these above images, I want to create planet type structures that are made up entirely of these skyscraper type boxes. So in a way, it looks like a planet completely entrenched by city structures.

This made me think about the little Planet effect which I am currently quite interested in. This is where you take a panoramic image and twist it so it looks like this planet type image which is quite cool, so these types of images were also an inspiration.

So taking from that, I want to create more of a spherical 3D version of it, and quite abstract as well  that does give off the idea of a planet, but does not automatically look like one. These images below are more of the spherical idea that I am considering when creating this piece:

So with this in mind, I want to create a process where the program creates a random selection of planets on click, with varied outcomes and pattens. I aim to do this by randomising each boxes’ colour within a defined range, and also its orientation. Also I want to randomize the number of boxes created and also have some times when chunks of the planet arent even generated.

So with this in mind, I have to look at colour and how I plan to use it. I have been using quite a grayscale soft aesthetic currently, but perhaps adding colour to it will add life and depth to my creations, after all, the earth isn’t black and white:

Crap that didnt help

Or did it?

I’ve swapped over the two projects and made the simple spiral more interactive and opaque with the pallete I found

But I’ve also changed my spherical shape so it is more randomly built and has the really nice colours.

Damn, now I’m not sure

I’m really really attracted to the gray colour aesthetic, but as it stands now it wont be interactive or anything just due to the fact that the random colours change every frame and I havnt got the time to change it. I also think that the colours dont look quite strong and the movement may take away from it as a static piece.

hmmmm, this has lead me to beleive that I should go with the grayscale structures. Simply because I really like them aesthetically.

But now I’m going to have to prove that they are worthy of a stand alone piece and don’t need to move or be interactive in order to be compelling and interesting. So i am now coming up with my new concept which will be briefed shortly

Ok, so what is my goal...

I really like the interactivity of my spherical internal world.

But I really like the soft aesthtic that my simple spiral offers.

Damn it, which one do I use for this project. If I had time I would build up both of them, but I’m getting worried time may be an issue once I want to polish the concept.

So foir a final test, I’m gonna swap the aesthetics of both projects and see what I get.

Concept Debate - Volume 2

So I have reached another crossroads.

I have decided Im not going to continue with my 2D exploits as it didnt get me as inspired as this work in 3D does.

But now I’m at another decision making point, should I go with the initial spiral with random boxes spraying out centrally- or do I go for this sphere type structure that is a lot more interactive, but is a bit away from the direction i was initially going to go?

They are essentially the same code but with a few tweaks here and there, so now I am leaning more towards the spherical shape as it give a lot more control to the user which is something i was after.

Just one thing I do wanna think about is the brief- something to do with hierarchy, symmetry and scale I believe? I’m not sure how much emphasis I should be putting on these few lines, but may try to come back to it maybe?
